ABSTRACT
Animal production is one of the major economic activities throughout the world. Even the smaller countries are giving priority to the production of the animal stocks of various kinds. China is the world leader in the pig production and the USA and Brazil appear among the first five leading countries in pig, cattle and chicken production. Application of the assessment methodology described by van Berkel allows a systematic and detailed analysis of the current way of operation of the PPU aimed at designing cleaner operations and processes. The animal production industry is a global major economic activity which provides food, raw materials for other industries, pharmaceutical products and jobs for several millions of people around the world. Hence, the industry should be constantly modernized and updated to lower costs of production, to keep already existing markets and open new ones.
