ABSTRACT

In essence, cleaner production represents a preventive environmental strategy for industrial production that reduces risks to human health and the environment. In 1993, United Nations Industrial Organization approached the Government of Zimbabwe to nominate a host institute for the Cleaner Production Centre of Zimbabwe (CPCZ). The CPCZ has been involved in a number of demonstration projects to show the value of cleaner production technology to industry in general. Demonstration projects were carried out at two branch sugar refineries located in Harare and Bulawayo. As a requirement of the group of companies of which the breweries are a part, an environmental policy is in place, and environmental issues are always covered in monthly reports. As part of its information dissemination, the CPCZ also produces newsletters which are distributed to various stakeholders. The main interest in cleaner production stems from improved business operations while environmental benefits are of secondary concern.
