ABSTRACT
Making the wild wind visible is a phrase from the poet Robinson Jeffers. He lived in a stone house on a high bluff overlooking the Pacific in California’s Big Sur country. In the beginning was the word. As countless cultures have noted, words are nothing but wind, human breaths formed and spoken. Universities look to the Web with both a mild sense of fear and hope. The fear is because of the emerging social debate about replacing the traditional university with a more electronic version of higher education that would include distance education, a learning-centered environment, and the increasingly centralized control that is possible in a networked world. Experiential cognition is the automatic reflexive thought that occurs when a pilot flies a plane, when an athlete makes a split second decision, or when a surgeon encounters the unexpected in the operating room.
