ABSTRACT

Women face special health care challenges that are directly related to their gender and often result in health care that differs greatly from that of their male counterparts and adversely affects personal health and quality of life. This article discusses the skills women need to become active, responsible advocates for their own health: effective communication techniques, finding the qualifications of their doctors and hospitals, personal medical record-keeping, legal rights and responsibilities, insurance options, and how to find additional health information.
