ABSTRACT

Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) has been shown to be effective, valuable, and necessary in providing optimum patient care. Clinical pharmacists, clinical pharmacologists, and clinical chemists may be involved in TDM, and consequently many TDM service models have been reported. Although the most effective model seems to be a multidisciplinary TDM service, in some hospitals this is not feasible in routine practice. This chapter describes TDM in a biochemistry service of a large public hospital and summarizes the results obtained during the 10 years it has been functioning. Since there is a central pharmacology department for the four hospitals, reports on drug levels are not accompanied by dosage recommendations.
