ABSTRACT

Among few other laboratories offering therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) services in Iran, our institution was the first to start, in 1984. At that time a young and well-trained neurologist who joined our staff in the university hospital requested antiepileptic drug measurement and encouraged us to set up a specialized section in the laboratory. We started with determination of phenobarbital, PB, and diphenyl-hydantoin, DPH (phenytoin), blood levels in epileptic patients, employing enzyme-multiplied immunoassay technique (EMIT) and commercially available kits (Syva Co., Palo Alto, California).
