ABSTRACT

To combat the rising use of drugs in the workplace, many American companies have implemented drug testing programs and are testing employees and job applicants for use of illegal drugs. In addition, on September 15, 1986, Executive Order No. 12564 was issued by President Reagan, which requires all federal agencies to develop programs and policies, one of the goals of which is to achieve a drug-free federal workplace. Included in this Executive Order is the requirement that federal agencies implement drug abuse testing. Thus, in both the private and government sectors in the United States, drug abuse testing has become a prevalent practice as a means to detect and deter drug abuse in the workplace. Before implementing a drug testing program, a company or agency should first decide for which drugs they will test.
