ABSTRACT

The worldwide availability of soybean products in sufficient quantities makes them definitely a reliable and viable alternative to fish meal in salmonid diets. Salmonids are one of the most important groups of finfish farmed under controlled conditions and totally relying on formulated diets. All the potential antinutritional factors identified in soy by-products seem to exert their effects in salmonids. Availability of phosphorus can vary depending on species and source. Compared to fish meal, mineral concentrations are low in soybean, except for iron, manganese, copper, and potassium. There is vast amount of literature on the use of soybean products in the diets of rainbow trout. Atlantic salmon is the most widely farmed salmonid species. Production of rainbow trout amounts to about 500,000 tons and the other Pacific salmon to a much smaller extent.
