ABSTRACT

The nutritional value of a number of species and cultivars of lupins has been assessed for a wide variety of fish and shrimp species. For lupin kernel meal to be used with confidence by diet manufacturers in shrimp diets, it is important that the factor or factors limiting the utilization of the kernel meal in the diets be identified. Lupin seeds typically have a higher crude protein content than most other grain legumes. The amino acid composition of lupin protein is similar to that of soybean but is characterized by relatively high levels of arginine, 11.3 to 12.2 g/16 g N, which is about twice the level in soybean protein. The carbohydrate composition of lupins is quite different from that of most legumes, as it contains high levels of nonstarch polysaccharides and very low levels of starch.
