ABSTRACT

Fish meal and high-protein soybean meal are staple ingredients of many of today’s manufactured aquafeeds. A number of underutilized and unconventional plant protein products are currently available for use in aquafeeds, and new products will be developed as agricultural processing technologies continue to improve. Peanut meal is a plant protein supplement used in animal diets and human foods. Peanut meal is made from the residue remaining after the oil has been removed from the peanut seed by either mechanical extraction or solvent extraction. Solvent-extracted sunflower seed meal has high protein content and a favorable amino acid composition for aquafeeds. Potato protein concentrate is a by-product of the production of potato starch. The research conducted with safflower seed products in aquatic animal diets has concentrated on the use of safflower oil as a source of energy and essential fatty acids in diets, rather than safflower seed meal as a source of dietary protein.
