ABSTRACT

This chapter describes some of the recent findings related to the use of fisheries by-products as protein sources in diets for aquatic animals and presents recommendations for further research and commercial development. The by-products of the processing industry are either disposed of into the ocean, or directed to the production of coproducts, primarily fish meal. There are two sources of raw material that can be used for the production of coproducts as protein sources for aquatic diets: harvested wild fish, either in directed fisheries or as by-catch, and fish processing by-products. Hydrolysates can have useful properties for use in aquatic diets, with particular relevance to fisheries by-product utilization. Stickwater is the de-oiled liquid obtained during the manufacture of fish meal. A number of factors affect the utilization of fishery by-products as ingredients for aquatic diets. These include logistics, nutritional quality, and, safety. Marketing and regulatory factors are also important to determining the success of these products.
