ABSTRACT

Crack resistance curves have been measured in layered Ce-ZrO2/Al2O3 composites with various layer thicknesses and with Ce-ZrO2 materials of two different initial fracture toughnesses. Increasing the transformability of the Ce-ZrO2 phase shifts the R-curves to higher values of stress intensity factor. However, the slopes of the R-curves were relatively insensitive to layer thickness over the range examined.
