ABSTRACT

A novel probe has been developed for measuring oxygen activity in molten glasses. The probe consists of a water-cooled metal support, an yttria-stabilised zirconia reference electrode and an alumina indicator electrode. Both the indicator and reference electrode can be quickly and easily attached to the support, providing a simple solution to the problem of replacing electrodes which have been corroded by the molten glass. The experimental results from both gas and glass trials show that the accuracy and signal stability of the water-cooled probe are the equal of a conventional probe.
