ABSTRACT
The microstructures of a number of breakaway scales formed in CO2 of apparently different form are described in an attempt to see whether or not the process has a single mode of control. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between the way carburisation occurs and the form of the scale as a function of both the oxidation temperature and alloy carbon content.
