ABSTRACT

The effects of oxidising a range of composites with different Al alloy matrices are described as examined using “edge-on” TEM. The specimens studied were made by the spray deposition route and contained SiC particles. The primary aim of the work carried out was to ascertain whether the presence of SiC particles can have significant effects on the oxidation behaviour of the matrix alloy for the systems examined. It was found that the inclusions had strong effects only on the oxidation of the Al-Li matrix, and both the reasons for this and their significance are discussed.
