ABSTRACT
A range of complimentary analytical techniques, including EPMA, SEM, EDX, TEM and LAMMS, have been used to investigate problems associated with protection of poorly prepared steel substrates by paint coatings. In particular, work has focussed on characterisation of rusts produced by natural weathering, coating failure mechanisms and the excellent performance of red lead oil-based paints.
