ABSTRACT

This chapter is aimed at improving the understanding of the law of similarity through two specific study cases in which examination regarding the combined issue of fluid and ground is made on the basis of the law of similarity. The first study case is the subsidence of wave-dissipating work due to scouring under the permeable structure composed of rubble stones and wave-dissipating blocks; the second study case is the formation of beach scarp as a result of erosion of sand for beach nourishment in the form of banking. In the former study case, not only gravity model tests but also centrifuge model tests are conducted. For the interpretation of the results of the centrifuge model test, Froude's law of similarity for centrifuge model test is applied.
