ABSTRACT

Ultraprecision machining (UMP) technology is an important indicator of a country’s capability in precision engineering, and the associated technological research and development. It is defined as the ultimate capability of a manufacturing process in which removal or addition of materials at the nanometric and/or even lower scale (e.g. atomic scale) is achieved. Within this process, conventional cutting tools do not have the cutting-edge sharpness or the hardness to cope with the highly specific cutting energy and thus tool wear, while UPM uses single crystal diamond (SCD) tools for ultraprecision cutting, grinding or polishing [1].
