ABSTRACT

The concept of the Digital Twin is rapidly gaining traction in industrial processes, encapsulating novelties and enhancing concurrent endeavours in Industry 4.0, big data applications, and machine learning. This chapter discusses the involvement of Digital Twin technology in industrial condition monitoring, specializing in its newest guideline of predictive maintenance, with a focus on electrical machines. The Digital Twin is surmised to be a very important tool to facilitate state-of-the-art procedures due to its synergistic approach with the latest sector methodologies. However, owing to its pioneering nature, researchers have not concluded on a single terminology or description, hindering its application and slowing advancement. This chapter aims to objectively present concurrent condition-monitoring methodologies and how the Digital Twin paradigm may be employed, to help clarify its role in relevant and broader industry while advancing research and applications via benchmarks and guidelines. A brief introduction to the concept is given initially, to link its definition with electrical machine condition-monitoring paradigms.
