ABSTRACT

While no one contests the opportunities offered by a Digital Twin (DT), the challenge is that DT is too broad a term and thus has varied interpretations owing to the wide spectrum of technologies and market needs. This confuses practitioners and confounds them when developing digital strategies, deciding between competing technologies, and communicating an organization’s digital strategy. To alleviate this challenge, we propose a conceptual framework that builds on the two fundamental questions: In a DT, (1) What is digital? and (2) What are we twinning? The framework can help practitioners make sense of DTs for their application because the meaning of ‘Digital’ and ‘Twin’ varies depending on the situation, use case, and context. A real-life case study demonstrates the use of the framework.
