ABSTRACT

Digital Twin (DT) is a groundbreaking technology that provides a virtual representation of a physical asset. It can be leveraged to enable novel capabilities that enhance the knowledge of the system and make the system smarter. This chapter is focused on suggesting a new development framework that uses DTs to make control and predictive maintenance smart. Initially, the difference between what is and what is not a DT is presented along with a summarized five-step DT construction framework. Then, the definition of intelligent system is introduced, and how DT realizes the function of controlling intelligent system and predictive maintenance is introduced. Two cases studies are presented to demonstrate DT capabilities corresponding to the smart control of a temperature uniformity control system and the smart predictive maintenance for a mechatronic testbed system.
