ABSTRACT

The concept of digital twin has recently raised interest in most research disciplines and economic sectors. Among the primary economy’s sectors, transportation is included. An economy cannot proceed without transportation; therefore, whenever new technology is applied in other sectors of the economy, transportation absorbs and develops this technology and transforms it for improved services. A digital twin is believed to become such a technology. However, what the digital twin can bring to the transport industry is still ambiguous. To address these problems, definitions of digital twins and applications in most of the transport branches are briefly summarized – as a result, clusters grouping applications of digital twins in transportation are presented. To do so, almost 300 publications related to digital twin transportation and logistics were investigated (logistics is an integral part of transportation). This research supports establishing the state-of-the-art digital twins in transportation coupled with logistics and suggests inspirations for future digital twins’ development.
