ABSTRACT

The emergence of digital twins has revolutionized many industries and changed the way we design, build and optimize complex systems. In healthcare, digital twins have emerged as a promising technology to facilitate personalized medicine and healthcare optimization. This chapter provides an introduction to digital twins and their history, followed by an overview of personalized medicine and its benefits, and the challenges and opportunities in healthcare optimization. The chapter also discusses how digital twins can be used in healthcare and how they provide explainability to artificial intelligence. After explaining how digital twins can help personalized medicine and healthcare optimization, various applications of this technology in healthcare such as disease prediction, treatment optimization, medical device design and workflow optimization are discussed. The chapter also presents real-world case studies of the successful application of digital twins in healthcare and highlights the technical and ethical challenges of applying digital twins in healthcare.
