ABSTRACT

90Roots of higher plants interact with the hyphae of some fungi and form a mutualistic association called mycorrhizal association. Mycorrhizal association helps in improving growth and development of plants by various ways such as improved nutrients and water uptake, improved defense mechanisms, and developed resistance against various biotic and abiotic stresses. Mycorrhizal biotechnology is very important for the better crop, forest, and the nursery establishment. The use of mycorrhizal inoculum for improved crop performance is very common and the focus of recent studies. The selection of inoculum in this regard is very critical. Inoculum must be ecologically and physiologically suitable for the planting site. Several commercial inoculation methods and techniques have been designed for inoculation of plant seedlings on a large scale. Recent studies focus on the role of mycorrhizal association in improvement and better growth of nursery seedlings and tree production. It also emphasizes on the establishment of new forests and nurseries.
