ABSTRACT

After the pandemic originated by the outbreak of a new virus in Wuhan, China, the future of tourism remains uncertain and grim worldwide. Basically, this happens because the steps and standard operating procedures adopted by different governments led to a strict lockdown which implied the closure of airspaces, borders, and free transit prohibition measures. What seems to be more important, the global economy of the world, at least as we know it has been fully paralyzed. In the mid of this mayhem, scholars adopted two positions. Some voices claimed for the rebirth of a new tourism industry, a more ecofriendly version of tourism which helps to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change. Others, rather, emphasized on the urgency to re-elaborate new methods to study tourism in a world characterized by low mobilities. This present chapter deals with the challenges and future of tourism research as well as the opportunities of scholarship to be finely integrated to shape more resilient destinations.
