ABSTRACT

Drawing on the approach of crisis management and on the case of Turkey tourism destination governance, this chapter extends understanding on the main impacts, coping strategies, and potential outcomes carried out by destination practitioners during and after the COVID-19 outbreak. Using hermeneutic approach, by reviewing the extended literature of crisis management, pandemic, tourism destination governance, and transformational leadership, this chapter provides recommendations about long-term strategies to tackle with the COVID-19 recently and similar pandemic crisis in the future. Moreover, in light of the previous coping strategies adopted toward past crisis including severe acute respiratory syndrome and Ebola, this chapter suggests strategies for effective destination and crisis management in the new normal. More specifically, it reveals existing measures and implementations done by the Turkey during the pandemic. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this chapter is among the first studies focusing on the destination governance during and after COVID-19 outbreak. Future studies can expand our knowledge by considering other tourism destinations and their coping strategies against the COVID-19 outbreak.
