ABSTRACT

The latest global estimates show that about 380 million children and adolescents and about 2 billion adults have overweight or obesity. These numbers are rapidly rising, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Prevalence seems relatively low in some Asian countries, but these seem underestimations because criteria have been applied that are not appropriate for many people with an Asian background.

This pandemic of overweight and obesity contributes greatly to the global incidence of chronic noncommunicable diseases.
