ABSTRACT

The increased energy consumption worldwide has led to the integration of renewable power into the conventional power grid forming microgrids and smart grids as a growing necessity of the power sector forming distributed generation (DG). This trend has boosted the application of power electronic technology (PET). The augmented use of PET has revolutionized advancement in the power sector with the integration of renewable energy resources, accelerated growth of microgrids, and smart grid technologies. This has caused emergence of several power quality (PQ) issues in the electrical power systems affecting the consumers and utility as well. Mitigation of PQ issues is imperative for an uninterrupted and smooth power supply. The existing techniques using FACTS devices and custom power devices (CPDs) have employed conventional methods of their control in mitigating PQ issues of microgrids. These techniques have their limitations and give only satisfactory performance. Artificial intelligence (AI) has surfaced as a state-of-the-art trend in solving PQ issues. Numerous trends like static custom power devices in low-voltage systems and FACTS devices in flexible AC transmission systems in combination with software have stepped forward and proved their suitability in enhancing the power quality and performance of the system. In this chapter, dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) has been considered using a better technique of its control in mitigating the voltage sag problem and results have been validated using MATLAB software.
