ABSTRACT

Digital transformation in healthcare is accelerating, powered by the convergence of the Metaverse, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and blockchain technology. This chapter provides a comprehensive analysis of these technologies’ role in reshaping healthcare from an engineering perspective. We explore the fundamentals of these technologies and their applications in healthcare, with a particular focus on system design, robotics, material science, and biomechanics. We present real-world examples highlighting the practical applications of these technologies, followed by an examination of the technical, ethical, and regulatory challenges they pose. Lastly, we discuss future prospects and the evolving role of engineers in this rapidly changing domain. Our review suggests that the digital healthcare journey, though laden with challenges, promises unprecedented benefits in terms of patient care and system optimization.
