ABSTRACT

The metaverse represents an evolution of the internet into fully immersive and interconnected virtual environments. This chapter examines the technological roadmap and key applications of the metaverse across sectors including healthcare, education, banking, and blockchain technology. A conceptual analysis reveals the metaverse integrates identity modeling, decentralized technology, and social computing to create a virtual reality (VR) experience. Core technologies facilitating the metaverse include VR, augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and extended reality (XR). VR offers full immersion via headsets disengaging users from physical reality. AR overlays digital information onto the real world through mobile devices. MR blends physical and virtual worlds for enhanced interactivity. XR encompasses the spectrum from VR to AR. Diverse applications in healthcare highlight metaverse potential in surgical training, clinical care, pain management, chronic disease education, and telemedicine. Educational implementations feature immersive learning, collaboration, and skill development. The metaverse provides the banking industry opportunities for enhanced customer communication, digital identity services, transparent lending, and contribution to carbon neutrality goals. Blockchain technology enables secure transactions, verifiable identities, and decentralization within the metaverse. However, challenges remain regarding accessible design, privacy, and responsible development. In conclusion, the metaverse signifies a major evolution in human–computer interaction, with significant implications across industrial, educational, medical, and financial domains that warrant further research.
