ABSTRACT

Fifty-eight species of coral reef associated bryozoans, three cyclostomes and 55 cheilostomes were collected in May of 1981, during a research cruise organized by Walter Adey of the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. The area studied, Caracol Bay, on the north coast of Haiti, is now part of the Three Bays National Park. Sampling for bryozoans was limited to 4 days and 7 sites between depths of 3 to 23 metres where bryozoans were collected by SCUBA diving. Species richness was exceptionally high for such a small area, yielding 43 percent of the total reef associated bryozoan diversity obtained from a decade of intensive collecting all around Jamaica. Five new species are described: Reptadeonella haitiensis, Celleporaria soleata, Petraliella calceata, Schizoporella trimaxillata, and Hippaliosina caracolensis. One additional species, Gemellitheca multilamellosa, described by Canu & Bassler (1928a) based on a Panamanian fossil specimen, is redescribed here with SEM illustration.
