ABSTRACT

Fukutoku-Oka-no-ba, a submarine volcano located in the Ogasawara Islands, erupted in August 2021 and a large amount of pumice washed ashore on the Okinawa Islands in October of the same year. Jellyella eburnea was found on small pieces of pumice on the west coast of Okinawa Island in the October. Subsequently, some larger colonies were also found on more than half of the pumice of various sizes collected on the beach at the north shore of Nakijin Village. This is the first report of J. eburnea from Japanese waters, and it is considered also common around Japan. Although J. eburnea has been reported from various drift materials and several studies on pumice rafting reported bryozoans including Jellyella spp., this is the first report of J. eburnea from pumice. Pumice rafting produced by submarine volcanic eruptions is thought to provide a large volume of rafting substrates, and it may also play a significant role in the dispersal of this bryozoan species.
