ABSTRACT

The prevalence of internet use increased worldwide, especially among youth. People use the internet for various reasons such as education, business, reading news, shopping, and so on. Although the internet provides a variety of benefits, it also has significant negative impacts. This study was conducted to explore the impact of problematic internet use on psychological well-being, hyperventilation, and chronic fatigue syndrome among youth. 448 college students from different colleges in Salem city were selected through stratified random sampling and the data was collected with Internet usage scale by Robinson and Mukundan (2016); General health questionnaire - 28 by Goldberg (1978); Nijmegen questionnaire by Van Doorn et al. (1982); and Chalder fatigue scale by Chalder (1993). Results revealed that the problematic internet use of youth had a significant positive association with somatic symptoms, anxiety, social dysfunction, and severe depression of psychological well-being as well as with hyperventilation and chronic fatigue syndrome.
