ABSTRACT

A parable is an earthly story with a heavenly meaning. The term “parable” is closely associated with Jesus Christ. It is the chief teaching method that Jesus used to convey the truth about the kingdom of God. Jesus employed a simple style of teaching to deliver lofty messages. The parables of Jesus contain socio-historic relevance. The parables selected for the present study are the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son. The trilogy advocates for the reconstruction of the Jewish perception of a sinner. It can be analyzed and interpreted from multiple perspectives. The present article takes a semiotic approach to the parables documented in Luke chapter 15. Semiotic are the systematic study of signs and symbols. This article studies the signs and symbols present in the parables. In addition, the identified signs and symbols are interpreted in the light of socio-historical aspects.
