ABSTRACT

The chapter provides a concise picture of the type of lipids, classification of lipids, and regulatory status of the lipids. The term “lipid” originates from the Greek word “lipos,” which may be translated as “fat that is greasy to the touch.” A wide variety of chemical substances known as lipids may be found in all living things, including plants, animals, and microorganisms. The fatty acids that are typically employed as components of cosmetic formulations are a mixture of triglycerides of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. Lipids protect the biological product against degradation and are helpful for targeted delivery. Oil-based lipidic products were the first ones that were developed. Almond oil is one of the common vehicles for cosmetic formulations. Lipids are composed of fatty acid, which is an essential part of the human body. Different oils such as soybean oil, olive oil, evening primrose oil, and others are used for medicinal, cosmetic, and nutritional purposes.
