ABSTRACT

Ellipses can be used to focus energy waves, study the motion of celestial bodies, elliptical gears with different speed ratios, football, design elliptical bridge arches or whispering galleries, and assist in processing operations to draw elliptical marking lines. Based on the many applications above, it can be known that drawing a standard ellipse is a very important part of the application of ellipse technology. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to design and manufacture a device that can generate a standard ellipse. However, an ellipse is a plane curve such that the sums of the distances of each point in its periphery from two fixed points, the foci, are equal. According to this characteristic, a six bars and seven joints mechanism with four connecting links, two sliders, two prismatic joints, and five revolute joints can be designed. This mechanism has a cross-shaped four-bar loop, and the cross-shaped loop will form two congruent triangles. In this mechanism, there is a revolute joint connecting two sliders at the intersection point of the cross-shaped loop, and the two sliders slide on a connecting link respectively. Then an ellipse can be drawn at the intersection point where the rotary joint is located. The research results are to design and build a device that can generate an Ellipse.
