ABSTRACT

Only hypotheses exist for the cause of the sinking accident of ferry Sewol, and validity and authenticity of the hypothesis are not confirmed. The objective of this study is to examine the effect of ferry Sewol’s external force, carrying out the full-scale ship collision simulation when an underwater object, such as a submarine, collided the ferry Sewol during a rapid turning, using Marine Accident Integrated Analysis System (MAIAS; highly advanced M&S system of Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) analysis techniques of LS-DYNA code suitable for the cause investigation of marine accident. Diverse collision scenarios were considered for the clarification of the cause of the sinking accident of ferry Sewol caused by the submarine collision, such as the collision locations, collision angles and velocities of submarine. As the results of various collision simulations, no possibility was found to affect the rapid turning of ferry Sewol.
