ABSTRACT

A scaled cabin model test design method considering damage energy similarity was established based on Shengming Zhang’s external dynamic analytical method for ship-ship collision. Under damage energy simi-larity principle, collision damage of a full-scale surface ship could be calculated from scaled cabin model test result obtained in lab. This study found that scale ratio had no effect on energy distribution ratio in ship-ship collision; length of ships affected energy distribution and relative collision speed should be improved in a cabin test model to achieve consistent result in a full-scale ship collision event; a non-zero surge speed should be applied to the collided ship model cabin for oblique collision case. The surge speed for collided ship model cabin became more and more impossible to ignore with the increment of distance between col-liding point and COG of collided ship model cabin.
