ABSTRACT

The need for electrification of the transportation industry has grown in response to growing worries about pollution, energy crises, global warming, and many other issues. The 21st century is truly the era of Electric Vehicles (EVs). However, there are a few EV-related problems that have not yet been resolved that merit research. One is the availability of efficient and environmentally friendly EV charging infrastructure. The unavailability of easily accessible charging infrastructure is one of the bottlenecks hindering the mass deployment of EVs. The establishment of readily Accessible, Sustainable, Smart Charging Infrastructure (ASSI) in cities is of utmost importance since cities or urban regions will be the early adopters of electric vehicles. As a result, this chapter seeks to explore ASSI planning within the context of cities. This chapter will focus on the necessity of charging infrastructure, types of charging infrastructure, the concept of smart charging, and globally executed pilot projects on charging infrastructure planning. Further, this chapter will conclude by presenting a few case studies on ASSI for cities and the way forward. This chapter is anticipated to provide the scientific community with the most recent advancements in the ASSI paradigm.
