ABSTRACT

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can be derived from various tissues. There is compelling evidence that MSCs can be safely translated to patients without the hindrance of allogeneic match, termed off-the-shelf MSCs. Bone marrow (BM) aspirate was initially studied for MSCs and its utility to be licensed as immune suppressor cells. This was followed by exhaustive studies on other MSC sources. Thus, BM-derived MSCs could serve as a basic method when culturing MSCs from other tissues. This chapter outlines the details needed to isolate and expand human MSCs from bone marrow aspirates.
