ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the convergence of Augmented Reality (AR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in cultural heritage (CH) exploration. AR and AI are two technologies that can enhance user experience in CH sites by providing personalised and immersive interactions, considered essential in the era of Industry 5.0. The chapter delves into the landscape of personalised user experiences within CH sites by reviewing the state-of-the-art AR and AI applications in CH sites and discussing the challenges and opportunities of combining them. Then, a case study showcases implementations of AR and AI at the infamous Malacca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The chapter concludes by addressing challenges and proposing future directions, guiding researchers, practitioners, and enthusiasts towards innovative applications of AR and AI for crafting enriched and personalised encounters within CH sites.
