ABSTRACT

Indian turmeric has a huge demand in the international spice market because of the high curcumin content in the rhizomes. This chapter encompasses the major diseases of turmeric with their effective integrated disease management practices. The disease appears as a soft watery lesion at the collar region of the plant. Drying leaves from the margin is observed as the foliar symptom. Integrated disease management involves the use of healthy and disease-free rhizomes for planting. As the disease is soil-borne, maintaining field sanitation is an important aspect of disease management. Disease-resistant turmeric cultivar can be used to prevent the occurrence of leaf blotch disease. Field sanitation and crop rotation with the non-host crop are recommended as preventive measures for blotch disease. Proper fertilization with biofertilizers and vermicompost enriched with biological control agents like Trichoderma is considered an integral part of turmeric disease management.
