ABSTRACT

Among all the diseases, fungal pathogens are the main problem of the linseed crop but there is no report of bacterial disease in India. The yield losses are reported as up to 16-100% and the oil content of the seeds is also reduced due to linseed rust in India. Linseed rust attacked all the aerial parts of the plant. The characteristic symptom of linseed rust at the initial stage appears a bright orange color on leaves and stems due to the presence of abundant uridial and is surrounded by reddish-brown telia. The genus Alternaria is a polyphagous fungus and occurs most frequently as a saprobe on dead organic material, plant debris, on or in seed and it is responsible for causing leaf spot and leaf blight diseases of many economically important agricultural as well as horticultural crops.
