ABSTRACT

“Foetal movement in the birth canal, which ultimately results in expulsion, is the central mechanism of labour. Changing the foetus’s head position during labour is essential for the baby to make it through the pelvis safely.

These movements involve the following:

Engagement

Descent

Flexion

Internal rotation

Crowning

Extension

Restitution

External rotation

Expulsion

“Active management of labour (AML) is a strategic approach to labour management already established in the active phase, with the purpose of preventing extended labour. 13 It is a set of measures used to shorten the duration of labour to fewer than 12 hours and includes monitoring the progress of labour closely, looking for signs of slowing cervical OS dilatation (rate of less than 1 cm per hour), and intervening quickly if necessary.
