ABSTRACT

Breast cancer is the most frequent female malignancy in India, accounting for 14% of all female tumors. “Modified radical mastectomy” (MRM) breast cancer surgery 30% of patients develop PONV, and 40% have post-op surgery. Opioids postoperatively, motion sickness, and not smoking are risk factors. This study compared post-surgery opiod-free versus opiod-based GA for breast cancer patients. Group F/opioid: 65 patients received 2 mcg/kg fentanyl intravenously before tracheal intubation. Group K/no opioids: 65 patients received 1 g (100 ml) of intravenous paracetamol 15 minutes before tracheal intubation, followed by 0.5 mg/kg of ketamine. After thiopental (3-5 mg/kg), both groups’ eyelid responses disappeared. An unpaired Student’s t-test and an analysis of variance were used to do the statistical analysis. 0.05 was statistically significant. Opioid-free general anaesthesia lowers post-operative nausea and vomiting, hemodynamics, and adverse effects in breast cancer patients. This was reduced by comparing anesthetics.
