ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how the workers’ compensation and rehabilitation processes are impacted by outdated work design strategies in healthcare settings. The primary goal of workers’ rehabilitation is to return an injured worker to their pre-injury condition in their substantive role or with as few restrictions as possible. While minor injuries are simple to manage and have few long-term consequences, more serious injuries require a significant investment by a range of stakeholders. Consequently, the case management role of a Rehabilitation and Return to Work Coordinator (RRTWC) becomes increasingly complex. It is hoped that Good Work Design concepts in the healthcare industry will assist in better outcomes for injured workers, their employers, and their colleagues. It should also improve the management requirements of the RRTWC.
