ABSTRACT

This chapter considers some of the issues related to the training of computer studies students in Zambia. The Diploma in Computer Studies is administered centrally by the Department of Technical Education and Vocational Training within the Ministry of Science, Technical and Vocational Training. For the effective teaching of computing, students must have access to an adequately equipped computer laboratory. The computer studies section has both the equipment and the skilled personnel to exploit this gap in the market. The computer section has enjoyed a raised profile among the industrial community in Lusaka. For the effective teaching of computing, students must have access to an adequately equipped computer laboratory. Establishing such a laboratory can be expensive and may well require assistance from a donor agency. Maintenance too can be prohibitively expensive and of questionable value given a lack of competitiveness and general low standards of training and technical competence among the equipment vendors.
