ABSTRACT

The renewed interest in rainwater catchment technologies has been accompanied by considerable innovation in both design of the systems and construction techniques. Rainwater Catchment Systems have been used since ancient times and evidence of roof catchment systems dates back to early Roman times. There are three basic types of rainwater catchment systems used for domestic supply, these are roof, ground and rock catchment systems. During the 1980s the use of rainwater catchment systems technology and especially roof catchment systems expanded rapidly in a number of regions around the world. Interest in rainwater catchment technology has, however, varied considerably within the region. Roof catchment tanks can provide good quality rainwater clean enough for anyone to drink, so long as the design features listed above are incorporated. A clean impervious roof made from non-toxic material is essential. Lead and asbestos roofs should be avoided as should any covered with lead-based paint.
