ABSTRACT

The first two essays in the section have to do with westernization, a subject that has often been linked with modernization and nationalism. The third essay is on musical institutions and social groups. It is followed by two essays on women and music-in China, as elsewhere, gender can be said to constitute a social context, and women’s participation in music is thus often of more than routine interest. The subject of music and Chinese society is covered in three essays, on the People’s Republic of China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong respectively.
