ABSTRACT

From past to present improvement of energy efficiency in maritime trade has been a common goal for all parties of the maritime industry, including shipping companies first. In order to reach this goal; vessels, ports and shipping companies have undergone adaptations in line with the scientific and technological developments. Adaptations have accelerated by published international conventions and national regulations. Despite all the developments occurred in the maritime sector; energy efficiency has still been the focal point of maritime industry. Therefore, ever-growing world merchant fleet requires improving energy efficiency, and taking new measures to reduce emissions.

This study has been aimed at the reduction of emissions and energy consumed by vessels. For this purpose, energy savings has been demonstrated, in case of the replacement of conventional lighting systems used on ships with Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology. As a result, the amount of energy savings and emission savings has been calculated for 24 hour period for a sample merchant vessel.
